OpenTalk at the Univention Summit 2023

OpenTalk auf dem Univention-Summit

Meet OpenTalk on January 17 and 18 at the Univention Summit 2023 in Bremen - the event for IT project managers from companies, municipalities and federal states. Around 400 attendees will exchange ideas with software and hardware vendors as well as IT service providers to keep up to date with the latest developments in Digital Sovereignty and successful projects such as the Sovereign IT Workplace, the dPhoenix Suite Gaia-X, the Sovereign Cloud Stack, video conferencing solutions such as OpenTalk and the digitalization of school IT.

Presentations and workshops with OpenTalk

The congress program offers a mix of technology and best practice presentations, keynotes, panel talks and workshops. Both here and in the accompanying exhibition area, we look forward to seeing you - live on site or virtually.

Keynote "How to deliver high-performance video conferencing without a US-based cloud?"

01/17/23 starting at 4pm with OpenTalk CEO Peer Heinlein.

Until recently, anyone looking for a capable and reliable video conferencing solution would have had a hard time avoiding cloud-based providers from the US. However, using these providers comes with data protection issues, a whole host of unanswered questions about data secrecy, and the general problem of the user losing their digital sovereignty. This lecture presents some of the answers that open source software can provide and gives insight into new features that you may not have seen before in traditional video conferences.

Workshop "Teaching and learning by video conference: Use cases and features".

01/17/23 starting at 2:00 p.m. with OpenTalk CEO Peer Heinlein.

Home-schooling is very much unlike a sales meeting: Schools and universities want to offer interesting lessons with varied content that is creative, interactive, and engaging. However, not all teachers are equally tech-savvy, and some can get stressed when facing the different learning environment that comes with online instruction. Some also struggle with the problem that there often is a lack of feedback from the students in their online sessions.

OpenTalk is a video conferencing solution that has been designed from the ground up and is positioned as a successor to Jitsi, BBB or Nextcloud. It offers many interesting features that help teachers in the class room and also has use cases where online instruction can be more effective than an in-person class.

In this workshop, we also want to provide some space to learn about your own experiences and ideas: What are the burning issues that need addressing in your online classes? Which additional features would you like to see in the future? We appreciate your input, which will help us shape accordingly the development roadmap for OpenTalk.

Workshop "Digital committee work: Use cases and features for politics and public administration"

01/18/23 starting at 9:00 am with OpenTalk CEO Peer Heinlein.

Organisations that are part of the politicial process as well as public authorities have particular requirements for video conferencing solutions to support digital collaboration. Facilitating committee work, effective moderation, automatic logging, and audit-proof voting are some of the requirements that are difficult to implement with traditional video conferencing solutions. Furthermore, there are special requirements when it comes to data protection, confidentiality, and digital sovereignty issues, and these can call into question the use of services that are based in foreign countries.

OpenTalk is a video conferencing solution that has been designed from scratch and specifically supports use cases that are relevant for public authorities and political organisations. OpenTalk was inspired by the video conferencing solution we previously developed for the city of Berlin, and is currently in state-wide use in the German federal state of Thuringia. There, OpenTalk offers many special features that were precisely tailored to meet the needs of public organisations.

In this workshop, we also want to learn about your own experiences and ideas for video conferencing: What are the important issues that need addressing in your organisation? Which additional features would you like to see in the future? Your input will be very valuable for us and shape the roadmap for the further development of OpenTalk.

Join us on January 17 & 18, 2023. We look forward to seeing you there!
