DINAcon 2026: How secure are our video conferences?
Video conferencing has become an indispensable part of day-to-day collaboration. But who actually has control over the information exchanged during these sessions? And what risks arise from the use of artificial intelligence? Peer Heinlein, founder and CEO of the Heinlein Group, will be speaking on this topic on 18 November 2026 at DINAcon in Bern.
In a talk entitled ‘Digital Sovereignty and National Security: Only with Open Source?’, Peer Heinlein will examine the risks that can arise from the use of commercial video conferencing platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Webex. In particular, the automated processing of confidential communications by AI raises questions regarding data protection and information security.
Secure video conferencing is a matter of digital sovereignty
Whether internal meetings, confidential business decisions or sensitive discussions within public authorities: video conferences often contain information not intended for third parties. This makes it all the more important to know where this data is processed, who can access it and what rights of use platform providers reserve for themselves.
In his presentation, Peer Heinlein uses selected terms of use to illustrate the interests that may lie behind commercial communication platforms and the resulting risks for businesses and public administration.
Open source provides an important foundation for digital independence in this regard. With open, transparent solutions such as OpenTalk, organisations can run their video conferences in a privacy-friendly and self-determined manner. The option of on-premises operation provides additional control over their own communications infrastructure.
